Section 2: Close analysis of 3 professional music videos(whole class,) covering 5 theoretical areas

The Golden Path-Chemical Brothers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlgsfLkAUVg

Representation

It is a mostly male work place. There is a hippy girl maybe the main man’s girlfriend? She is pretty. The work place is dull and boring; they all represent the working class. He doesn’t seem happy ay work but he seems to be really happy in his fantasy world. The main singer is a dreamer, it is all brightly coloured when he is thinking about the girl. The lyrics show that the chemical brothers are free spirited.

Genre

The video has a narrative but no performance by the artists. The chemical brothers have developed their own style/genre of video. It’s like dance music, there is dancing at the end… with drum and bass.

Narrative 1

Man goes to work and the lyrics suggest it as Hell. He often escapes to a hippy populated field which contrasts to the setting and characters of the work.

Narrative 2

Slight connectivity between lyrics and video e.g. Exploding coffee cup-volcano, work=some sort of hell, printer-the devil/demon, field-the golden path.

Narrative 3

Beginning- He is walking to work, very repetitive, he crosses roads without looking. Next everybody is in the lift, it is full.

Middle-He’s transported into a better world that contrasts with the work place, with it being happy and colourful. “The Golden path” is dull and colourless.

End- He escapes the dull work place for his happy place.

Narrative 4

It has a linear narrative structure- Shows a sense of progression. It’s linear throughout.

Narrative 5

Boss=Villain- Tough, gives rubbish wage.
Worker=’Princess’ Not amazing at job, bad wage, crappy life.
Girl/Hippy=Hero’s- Free to do what they want save worker from bad life and job.

Narrative 6

Work/Play, Control/Freedom, Good/Bad, Happy/Sad- Binary opposites-Stress/Calm, Colour/Black + White

Lily Allen-Smile
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WxDrVUrSvI

It contains a narrative, lypsynch. Its genre is pop, very British.

The video foregrounds Lily Allen performing the song. The performance combines with narrative-often merging together in the same scene. The genre of music is British Pop (with reggae beat)-Reflected in gritty, working class, urban mise-on-scene, and generally unspectacular cinematography.

Narrative 1

The narrative focuses on Lily getting revenge on her boyfriend for cheating on her. The narrative illustrates and amplifies the meaning in the song-‘With a little help from my friends’-friends help Lily to take revenge.

Beginning-She is alone and sad
Middle-Taking revenge in different ways
End- She is alone/happily smiling
Narrative is generally linear but with lots of ellipsis and flashbacks.

Characters relate to conventional archetypes-boyfriend=villain, Lily=princess/hero, friends=helpers.
Binary oppositions-male/female, sweet/nasty, kindness/cruelty, violence/pleasure, together/alone, sitting/walking, smiling/not smiling, colourful/drab, pink/black, looking at the camera/not looking at the camera.

Media language- Mise-en-Scene

The key signifiers in mise-en-scene is working class locations-flat,café,street,club. Lily is girly, feminine but tough, she wears a dress with trainers and jewellery, with pink eye shadow and black eye liner. Lily’s facial expressions are smile/frown. Lily’s flat is bright, colourful. Her boyfriend’s flat is drab and colourless. The other characters are you typical ‘chav’ with there outfits, baseball hats, hoods, etc. The final scene Lily is walking down the middle of the road- this shows confidence.

Camera angels-There is a close up on Lily;s face white singing-this shows the connection between audience and star. There are mid shots that show fair, hair, jewellery and costumes showing Lily’s personal style. There is a long shot into Lily’s bedroom this emphasises her aloneness. There are frequent tracking shots in the bedroom, emphasis Lily’s stillness, stuck. There is use of hand held camera during violent scenes, this creates realism. The final reverse tracking shot in the street this emphasis Lily’s power and control of the situation. There is no overlay of dramatic shots, such as arail shots, crane shots etc, down to earth.

Editing

It is generally fast paced editing, no shot is longer than two beats. There is opening flashbacks which show her remembering happy times. There is some continuity editing used in narrative scenes, but ellipsis is used a lot to condense the narrative making it shorter. Cross cutting shows Lily doing nothing while her friends take revenge on boyfriend, there is editing used to emphasise binary opposition between them. There is a shot reverse shot in the café, this again emphasis opposition between Lily and boyfriend.

Representation

Lily Allen is represented as feminine but tough, sweet innocent grain of voice contrasts with harshness of lyrics, facial expressions, costume and makeup all contribute to this representation.

The gender representation is for males as dishonest and cheating. Females are represented as victims of male dishonesty, but not weak they are capable of being devious and cruel themselves.

The social class/age representation is that working class/youths are generally unsophisticated-driven by basic urges, revenge, money, etc, use violence to get even.

Audience

Target audience-Youth, female? British?
The song is addressed to ‘you’ (boyfriend) but in the video she sings to the audience not to him-sharing her secret thoughts with the audience. The audience get pleasure at sharing Lily’s revenge. The video might influence female fans to be less accepting of male dishonesty in relationships. Viewers might find the video useful in thinking about their own relationships, or in sharing their liking for Lily Allen with other fans.

The Lighthouse family-I wish I knew how it would feel to be free
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeCAkrg4fNE

Aspects of performance/mode of address
The aspect of development shows people on a train, it shows their thoughts and their lives and what they go through. Mode of address is used in the music video. The man on the train is in the band, as the audience we know this because he is walking up and down the train looking down at the camera. The camera is tracking. There is no dance moves used in the music video. It is mostly narrative based, which relates to the performance which is in the narrative.

Narrative

The narrative is non-linear we know this because; there is a use of flashbacks into people’s lives. Throughout the video there is a clear, beginning, middle and end. Beginning-Everybody gets onto the train. Middle-The artist sings to them. End- Everybody gets off the train and walks into the light going up the escalator.

How does the video create an image for the star artist/band?

There is a lot of close ups used on the main star, His face is our main focus. This video suggests that the lighthouse family lifts people’s lives and spirits. There video sends out a message to the audience. The video creates a laid back and cool atmosphere.

Mise en Scene

The artist stands out from everyone else he is wearing a black hat, black leather jacket and black pants. There is a big contrast between the train and the train station. The train is packed but the station is really empty. People can relate to public transport the way it is set on a train. The people on the train are dressed in rather normal clothes.

Use of camera

At the beginning there is an establishing shot, which shows the train track. There is a tracking shot used throughout the video which follows the man down the train. There is an over the shoulder shot used to get the characters point of view, through there eyes.

Editing/Special effects

There are flashbacks used to show peoples problems, fades are also used to illustrate this. The special effects in this music video are rather simple, and are used through editing techniques. Also the transitions from each shot are smooth.

Representation

The people on the train are either lower or working class. Between the artist and the passengers there is a status divide. Even though the artist doesn’t stand out, he takes of his hat, as a sign of respect. The lead girl is a stereotype with blonde hair girly porcelain skinned face. Religious connotations are demonstrated through this music video, through the light. As the underground is dark and is signified as hell, but the top is signified as heaven as it is a lot lighter and pleasant.

Channel

This song may be seen on a music channel like Magic, VH1 and Smooth because they are very mellow music channels and are targeted for an older audience.

Section 3: Close analysis of 2 professional music videos(relevant to your group's specific choice of song/genre, etc.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgDdeBrGrro
Spice girls-‘Spice up your life’

Genre-

The video has a narrative and a performance from the artists. The genre is pop; it is very British and has the used lip-syncing in it. The video foregrounds spice girls performing their song. The girls are dressed up for a night out. They seem to be enjoying themselves through out.

Narrative

The girls are enjoying themselves, the lyrics don’t exactly connect to the words, but some of the dance moves relate to the lyrics. There is a clear middle-Beginning –End
Beginning-A very weird setting in s dull grey place.
Middle- The girls enjoying themselves in s city, lots of bright colours.
End-The girls are all together in a flying machine.
The video is a non linear structure as we are not totally sure what is going to happen.
Spice girls=Party girls, in charge, enjoying themselves
Man=Lost, sad, alone.
Boy/girl dull/colour bright/black light/not light

Representation

The girls are represented as being very girly, the city starts of by looking very dull and polluted. When the music starts colour gets brought in and the city gets very bright and colourful. The city is represented as boring but the girls seem to be having a good time. The lyrics show that the girls are very wild.

Audience

The target audience is mostly teenage girls and older. The song can relate to a lot of people as it is telling people to ‘Spice up their lives’ if they are feeling down. The girls are making a lot of eye contact, with the camera this shows they are including the audience a lot and singing to them. Viewers might find this video useful as it might make people stop and think about there lives, if they are down or have problems it could make them forget about it all, this video could distract them away from their own lives.

Editing

It is very fast paced editing, no shots are longer then 2-4 seconds, there are a lot of bright colours to show the bright city. There is a flying car that goes round the city with the girls in it. The is cross cuts used from the girls in the flying machine to shots of the city. There are times when the girls themselves look as if they themselves are flying.

Camera Angles

There is a long shot of a man sitting at a desk in a dark room; we’re not quit sure who he is. There is a mid shot on the dark city then a pan down. We then have a long shot of the polluted boring city. There is an over the shoulder shot of the man looking into the mirror; we still don’t know who he is, or why he is there. There is then a pan down and we see traffic lights, this shows the emptiness of the city, as the traffic signs really stand out. We see a long shot of the five girls as they are in their flying machines. Then there is a close up on the girls, they are singing and looking out onto the city. There is then a pan around the mans office and it looks really dull and boring. There is various close ups on the girls as they are flying around, they look like they are having a good time.

Beyonce-Sweet dreams

Representation

It is an all girl video the three girls are feminie but tough at the same time. The main artist in it0Beyonce is having a nightmare. The settings looks like a dessert isalnd. There is alot of dancing throughout the piece. Beyonce is represented as a preety sexy lady..We are not quite sure but we are thinking she is singing about a boy. She seems happy and very confident.

Genre

The video has a narrative and also a performance from the artist. Danicing is use throughout the video. The song is pop, the girls are dressed in verysexy clothes.

Narrative

Beyonce sings about having a sweet dream or a beautiful night mare, you see her asleep at the start as if she is having this dream or night mare, she looks very disturbed. The lyrics link to the settings of the song, also certain words link to various movements and gestures.
There is a clear Beginning-Middle-End
Beginning-She is asleep having this dream or night mare, thn she wakes up.
Middle-She is dancing with the girls, it is as if there are trying to work something out.
End-She says she 'dosent want to wake up for you' then the lights go of, maybe she is happier in her sleep then in reality.
It is non-linear as you dont really know what will happen at the end.
Beyonce=Princess Dancers=best friends
dream/nightmare Day/Night Happt/Sad Scared/not scared

Audience

Target audience is mostly girls, the song is addressed to 'you' meaning us, say we could be the dream or night mare, viwers could find the video unusual, and also feel sorry for beyonce. The video could also make people think about what she is saying in her lyrics in the song.

Treatment A2 Media Studies

The Artist – The Backup Plan
Song Title – Without a Meaning
Target Audience – Mostly teenagers aging from 15 to early 20’s. Students

Outline of Narrative

The track is about a break-up and relationships and how the main vocalist is singing about a boy wanting his girlfriend back, even though he knows he has done wrong (lied). The main singer is male which is suitable with the narrative as it will be from a boy’s perspective. The song starts with instrumental, for this we would have close-ups and a range of long shots of the girl and boy reminiscing their good times together. When the boy begins to sing, we will include a long shot of him laying on a bed, then a close-up of his phone. We will then have a shot reverse shot of the girl with her phone and several missed calls signifying the importance of how hard the boy is trying to get in contact with her, but she is just ignoring his calls which suggest that she is avoiding him on purpose. Next there will be an over the shoulder shot of the boy and girl arguing. You will see the emotion on both of their faces from the other ones point of view. Next there will be a mid close up followed by a long shot of her walking off. Next there will a point of view shot on the boys hand as he is drawing broken hearts on a page. The chorus starts and we will have a close up of the alarm clock showing, 3.00 am. The time shown on the clock emphasises the lack of sleep that the boy has had through the night. There is then a long shot of some photographs of the boy and girl on the side. He goes over to pick them up and the camera follows him. Then there is a range of different close up as he flicks through the photographs, this is from several different angles. There is then an over the shoulder shot of the boy writing lyrics down in a note pad. This shows the boy expressing his feelings through the words in the lyrics. Next we will have a mid shot of the boy holding a set of plane tickets. Signifying that they are going away together, for some alone time, maybe to work things out. Next there will be a close up shot of his watch showing 3 am, and he is still alone. Then there will be a panning shot of the boy walking to the window looking out. Then there will be a high angle shot looking down from the window. We see the girl standing there, but really this is his imagination as she dissolves away. Next we have a long shot of the boy stood at the front door with bags in his hands as if he is going somewhere. Then a low angle shot as he walks away from his front door. Then there will be a pan upwards following him as he walks away. Then there will be a tracking shot as he is walking through the leaves. This shows the change in season and his emotion. This emphasises the change in time if faster when he is not with her. Next there will be a cut from the boy walking down the street to them both playing chess together. This will link to the song as kings are played with in a game of chess. Next there is a mid shot of the boy playing his guitar. The girl is sat beside him as he is singing to her; they both are gazing into each other’s eyes. We then have the chorus again, he is listening to his iPod and there is an over the shoulder shot him as he starts to play on his guitar. His iPod gives him inspiration to play the girl a song. The girl is no longer there, she dissolves away and it is just him left there, alone, the room is quite empty which represents the loneliness of him. We have a high angle shot showing his status which is low.
